His heart constricted as he heard the sobs. He should go after her but it was as if something held him in place. He had his own weight to carry and he couldn't shake the horrible thought that he was losing his daughter.

He went home. He made sure someone was there to watch out for his wife and then he went home. It was five in the morning and he pulled up outside the massive double doors and sat there in his vehicle staring off into space. It was almost February and the winter storms persisted, dumping piles of snow on the ground. He'd met Carole in February two years ago and had proposed to her. They'd gotten married in March. It had been so simple then. Even though people had thought he was crazy to fall in love and marry a woman he barely knew, he hadn't cared about that. The heart wants what the heart wants. His fingers curled around the steering wheel tightly. He loved her and nothing would ever change that but they shouldn't have gone ahead with the multiple births, it had certainly complicated things. If he lost Brianna—he cut off the thought abruptly and rested his head on the wheel. He couldn't bear to think about it and he knew that if they lost her things would never be the same between them. He lifted his head at the knock on the window. He pressed the button and the glass slid down silently. “Jeffries what are you doing up?”

“I'm usually up at this time of the morning sir,” he said as he doffed his cap respectfully. “Are you okay sir?”

“I am.” He smiled at the man. “I'm just going in to check on the children and then I'm going to the office.”

He opened the door and Walter got out, wrapping his jacket around him. “Thank you.”

“We're praying for Miss Brianna sir.” He said as Walter walked past him.

Walter turned to look at the man. “Thank you Jeffries.”

He dusted off the snow from his feet as soon as he entered the foyer. The smell of coffee permeated the air from all the way in the room. He could hear his stomach growling but he bounded up the stairs and made his way into the children’s rooms. He smiled as he saw that Arianna was still fast asleep and when he went into the boys’ room he found them up and Mavis and Sara tending to them.

“Dada!” They both jumped up as soon as they saw him.

“Mr. Walter!” Sara exclaimed. “I thought you were still at the hospital. How is she?”

“No change,” he told her soberly. “I just want to spend some time with the boys before I go to the office.”

“We'll leave you to it.” Both women left the room.

“Hey there fellows,” he lifted both in his arms and sat on one of the sofas with each child on his lap.

“Dada play,” Jayden reached up to touch his unshaven jaw.

“Of course you would want to play.
